Money Matters
Banking
Most banks are open Mon-Fri 09h00-17h00 with some city centre offices open on Saturday morning. Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are widely available throughout the area and most are linked to Maestro, Cirrus or Plus international money systems. Delegates are advised to check with their local bank prior to travelling.
Credit Cards
The majority of hotels, restaurants and shops in Scotland accept major credit cards such as Mastercard, VISA, American Express, Diners Club and JCB.
Currency
British currency is the pound sterling and there are 100p (p) to the pound (£). The banknotes most commonly used are for the denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50. There is coinage for £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p.
Value Added Tax
All prices in the UK include VAT at 17.5%. Visitors from outside the EU may not need to pay VAT on all purchases and there are some stores that operate a VAT refund system.
VAT Refunds for Visitors
If you are travelling from out with the European Union and you buy goods in the UK, you may be entitled to claim a tax refund.
